Pilot Study Results

Our pilot study was supervised by Dr. Brian Zheng, a Harvard urologist and assistant professor with specialized training in urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery. Dr. Zheng's expertise in urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, and related conditions made him an ideal supervisor for our research. The study utilized a commercial off-the-shelf light therapy device that served as a technological proof of concept, demonstrating promising self-reported results for women seeking UTI and bladder pain relief.

The study showed that participants experienced an average pain reduction of 27.5%, with 60% of participants choosing to purchase the product after the trial concluded.

"I've had nonstop bladder pain for seven years. I was on antibiotics for three of them. This was the first time I saw improvement without meds. The change wasn't huge, but it was real—and for me, any forward movement is worth it. I used the device more during high-risk days, like after intimacy, and I didn't flare up like I usually do. That's never happened before. I bought the device after the study ended because even small relief, when you've had nothing, is a big deal."

"I used to dread going to my daughter's soccer games. I'd stop drinking fluids hours beforehand, scout out bathrooms in advance, or make plans to sneak off to gas stations because I couldn't hold it comfortably for more than 20–30 minutes. But during this past month, I noticed I could sit through the full game—over 90 minutes—and still feel fine. That's the kind of shift that affects your quality of life in a huge way. It let me show up as a mom without worrying about where the nearest bathroom was."

Our Research

At MinaRosa, we're committed to scientific integrity to ensure our products deliver real results. Our story begins with our Founder, Ana Timoficiuc. While interning at SpaceX in LA, she had a urinary tract infection (UTI)—this wasn't abnormal for her because she's had them since she was a kid. However, her doctor was 3,000 miles away in Michigan, she was without medication and in a lot of pain, with no options. She had heard of light therapy and decided to experiment on herself based on several research papers she read. After using it consistently, her UTI-related pain went away! Since then, we've worked with microbiology research, pilot studies, and are moving into efficacy, double-blind studies with urologists at the Michigan Medicine hospital.

Our microbiology research was conducted through the University of Michigan Medical School, specifically in partnership with the Mobley-Pearson-Anderson Research Lab that focuses on molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis as it relates to the urinary tract. Under the guidance of Dr. Santosh Paudel, we found that the red and infrared light did not kill bacteria, so we moved onto testing bladder cell lines. It is here we found that the light therapy was increasing the cellular energy of the cells; we hypothesized that the increased energy made the bladder cells more efficient leading to better pain management and decreased inflammation making it harder for bacteria to hide.

Our pilot study took place over the last four months as we bought commercial off-the-shelf light therapy devices and set up the proper medical protocol under Dr. Brian Zheng's supervision. The goal of this study was to derisk our biggest assumption that women were interested and willing to try light therapy for their intimate pain. It was incredible to see the daily improved self-reported results with these women as the 30 days of the study passed.

We continue to invest in research and development to improve our technology and expand our understanding of how light therapy can benefit women's health.
